iPad update

I’ve been putting this off because I didn’t think there was much to say about having one in the house.

I’m wrong.

We reach for it first, it’s fast and does almost everything we want.

It moves from the kitchen, for the weather and the morning news, to the living room for discussion-inducing fact checking, football stats, dog allergies, cleaning tips, and surfing.  We hardly bother to turn on the ‘old’ style computer, or laptop.

The Seniors in our life all go home asking for one.  I can’t explain just how easy it is for any of them to comprehend the iPad but once they figure out that they are allowed to touch the screen, they’re gone for hours.

My Mother-in-Law has no previous computer experience.  She’s been using our iPad for 4 days and is having trouble understanding why my Father-in-Law is so slow with his laptop.  She uses the iPad, a touch here, one there and she’s got the weather, the lottery numbers and the home newspaper.  She’s addicted to puzzles, she’s learning Sudoku and just discovered Wikipedia.

“How come it takes you so long?”  She quizzes.

“Because he’s using a laptop and mouse, it’s slower.”  I answer for him, “he has to get the mouse cursor to the right place, click the correct mouse button and wait.”

“He needs this.  Can we buy one?”

I’ve already tried this with the other two Seniors in my life, “Yes, but you still need a computer to connect it to, update it and other things.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah, sorry.”

So, if Apple is wandering across this site and scrolls to reach the end of this blog, please, please, can you make the iPad a standalone product?  One that does not need to get plugged into a computer.  One that just works from the get-go? I have four people already that are anxious to purchase one.

eReader Article

This is a quick, well thought through analysis of eReaders in general and worth considering.

Barnes and Noble for sale

This was shocking news to me yesterday.

My local Barnes and Noble is seemingly always full of people, busy people buying books and stuff.

The Nook, I thought was a HUGE success and was hungrily eating away Kindle’s market share.

So, why the “FOR SALE” sign?  I’m confused…

Apple iPad

Finally, I was able to show my Mother the Apple iPad.  She loved it!

“It’s so easy.”  She cooed.

And she could use it without much more than me showing her how to turn it on.  She’s in her 70′s, with very little computer experience and yet she had that iPad figured out in about 30 seconds.

“I send emails here?” she pointed to the icon, accidentally touching it.  “Ooh!” As the keyboard imaged on the screen.  She  was already typing away before I was able to say ’Yes,’ and ’here’s how you use it’.  She left me in her dust as she explored the unit.  “Pictures here?  And this is where my music would be?  Ah!  Look, it has a Scheduler!  It’ll take all my phone numbers.”

I nodded then wandered around the Apple store as she played away.

We would have walked out with one, but it’s not an independent unit.  It HAS to plug into a computer at some point or another and that isn’t an option for her.  She can recharge the unit anytime, but loading music, pictures and printing recipes is challenging without a supporting computer.   We tried a few options, but none really worked.  I’d hoped that ‘MobileMe’ would provide the answer, but it doesn’t provide that capability.  So, she’s stuck needing a regular landline based computer, in ADDITION to the iPad.

We’ll both be waiting patiently for Apple to sort that out, until then, it’s a no-sale.

iPad, SlashGear Review

This review from SlashGear brings out an interesting change in how people interface with computers.  The Author suggests that Apple has brought ‘us’ into touch computing with the iPad.

Personally, I had not thought there was any other way to interface with a computer expect with the keyboard and mouse.  Apple, has opened a peephole into Hollywood computing – much like Tom Cruise’s character in Minority Report who was washing a lexan screen with computer images tracking to his fingers.

It’s intriguing…

One note on SlashGear, before you go there – the site is rife with cookies and numbered cookies as well ( I really don’t trust the numbered ones) so get your mouse ready to say ‘block all’ – http://www.slashgear.com/from-click-to-touch-ipad-the-era-of-touch-computing-0680617/

Color eReaders? Liquavista!

Expect them in 2011 -

Dutch firm Liquavista has announced a color screen with low power consumption and a high refresh rate.   Here is the BBC article with video clip – http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/click_online/8610962.stm

The power consumption is considerably lower than standard LCD screens (but not as low as e-ink screens) and in theory can allow a standard laptop battery to run for days instead of hours.

The technology used is ‘electrowetting’ and it allows fast screen renderings; fast enough to run video.

Liquavista expects their screens to be available in 2011, as they are a supplier to the market, the screens will appear under a variety of Branded products.

Currently the only color eReader on the market is the Fujitsu FLEPia, but that unit is restricted to Japan and suffers from very slow screen refresh rates (almost slow enough to get a coffee between page turns).

Nook – Free Fridays

Not being a Nook owner, I was unaware of this delightful little treat that’s offered up every Friday; Yes, a FREE eBOOK, the entire book, not just a preview.

Also, different Barnes and Noble locations occasionally offer a ‘local selection’ that’s different from the Corporate Offering.  So, you could actually download two free ebooks on a Friday.

Ahh, it’s nice to have a Nook…

This link takes you to the Nook Blog that talks about the Free Fridays (it is not a download site) http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/Unbound-nook-and-BN-eReader-Blog/Free-Fridays/bc-p/506638?nobounce

iPad wifi connection issues

When you’re the first one in the world with the new toy, you also become the first ‘field’ product tester.  While Apple has worked hard to ensure the iPad will work very well, they couldn’t test every wifi connection out there.

Most of the iPads are connecting happily with local wifi’s and their users are happy, but for those with wifi connection problems, here’s Apple’s support site http://www.apple.com/support/

Here is the site I found that offered some help (the other sites just complained).  Scroll about 1/3 of the way down to the ‘What You Can Do’ section -  http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2362319,00.asp, and Thank You Samara Lynn, PCMag.com

Be happy with your iPad, it’s really an amazing product.
